March 13, 2017 (Hobbit Day 4)

Hobbit Appreciation Day 4 – Chapters 11-14

– ‘On The Doorstep’ – the dwarves find the door, and it opens on Durin’s Day
– ‘Inside Information’ – Bilbo meets Smaug
– ‘Not At Home’ – the dwarves are forced inside the mountain by Smaug’s rage, but they find he is not at home
– ‘Fire And Water’ – meanwhile, Smaug flies to Laketown to destroy it

– “Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous thing that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.”
– “‘They shall see me and remember who is the real King Under The Mountain!'”

Art: The Dwarves rest at the doorstep
– FEATURED: On The Doorstep by Chris Rahn , Smaug, King Under The Mountain Smaug attacks Laketown Smaug and Bard

Notes: This is when the Hobbit takes a major turn from fun fairy tale to rather dark fantasy. Fire And Water is a classic chapter, try not to get it spoiled by looking at the art before you read it! Only a week left until we start Lord Of The Rings – make sure you have either a one-volume copy or a full set because we’ll be jumping back and forth between Fellowship Of The Ring and the appendices of Return Of The King for a while. Get hyped! ~Tom
